Some people live off salads, whole grains, wheat bran, oatmeal, and flax seeds and are under the assumption that these foods were the foods they needed to eat for fibre to keep them regular.

Forcing bulky foods like raw vegetables, whole grains, wheat bran, and flax seeds is like pushing waste through your digestive tract. This is like forcing garbage down a pipe without breaking it up first. It is tough going. And the lining of your gut is not made of metal or copper; it is made of human tissue. The key to propelling food and waste through your gut is muscular tonicity and lots of digestive enzymes to break down the food.


You have two key activities that allow you to digest food well. The first is peristalsis and the second is digestive enzymes.

• Peristalsis is an in and out movement of your digestive tract from your oesophagus in your throat to your rectum and anus. You literally propel the food forward with an in and out movement. When you continue to do quick fix, low-calorie diets combined with lots of exercise and you slow down your metabolism, your body slows down peristalsis.

• Digestive enzymes are made in the stomach and pancreas and have the capacity to break down food to their smallest denominator.

• Bile is made in the liver and stored in the gall bladder. It is critical for emulsifying or breaking down fats and also for cleaning the digestive tract.

All of these activities break down food and keep it moving so the nutrients can be absorbed into the bloodstream.


1. Plant foods that are indigestible contain cellulose and PUFA. These materials are damaging to your gut walls and soon the damaged cells start to swell up and slow down the muscular movement of the gut. High adrenaline from low blood sugar also causes poor circulation of nutrients and oxygen to the gut.

2. Peristaltic movement stimulates the release of digestive enzymes like amylase for carbohydrates, lipase for fats and protease for proteins. So poor movement lowers levels of enzyme release.


1. Eat only foods that heal your gut. Gelatin, dairy, ripe fruits are at the top of the list. Gelatin lowers PUFA, dairy is easy to digest (like for a baby) and contains all the nutrients needed for healing, and ripe fruits add the sugar for energy to heal. Dial the starches right back!

2. Eat smaller meals and eat more often and try to eat at the same time each day. Slow down and chew your food properly.

3. Eat a raw carrot salad daily, bamboo shoot mixture and cooked mushrooms daily.

4. Add well-aged Cascara Sagrada (a herb made from the bark of a special tree), which can lower inflammation and stimulate the digestive tract to start moving normally. This is the only one we recommend:

Start with 1/8 of a tsp at morning and night you can work up to 1/4 tsp per serving. It’s best to split the doses up into 2-3 doses per day.

5. Use small amounts of coffee to get the gut moving if constipated.

6. Be consistent with all of the above! Things will not improve if you don’t do these things consistently.

7. Lower your muscle meat consumption and get more of your protein from dairy, eggs, gelatin and seafood.
